Schengen consulates are the most reservation-friendly in the world. The official documentation lists a flight reservation rather than a purchased ticket, which is exactly why the dummy ticket is standard practice for Europe. Which consulate you actually apply at
You apply at the consulate of the country where you will spend the most nights. If the nights are evenly split, you apply where you will arrive first. Insurance: the €30,000 minimum
Travel medical insurance is mandatory, with minimum cover of €30,000, valid across all Schengen states for the entire period of stay. Policies that cover only the country you are visiting are rejected. The policy dates must bracket the trip — starting before you land and ending after you leave — and the insurer must be recognised in the Schengen area.
Biometrics and the 59-month rule
Fingerprints and a photograph are collected at the visa application centre. Once given, they are normally reusable for 59 months. If you have travelled to Schengen within that window, you may not need to attend again, which changes appointment availability considerably. Keep the previous visa or the receipt.
The 15-day to 6-month application window
You can apply no earlier than six months before departure and, in normal circumstances, no later than fifteen days before. In peak summer and around major holidays, appointment slots at the centres fill weeks ahead. Time the application from your intended travel date and build the itinerary to match the appointment you actually get.
Multi-city itineraries need to match the main destination
If you are flying into Paris, training to Amsterdam, and leaving from Frankfurt, the main destination is whichever country accounts for the most nights. That country's consulate must be the one you apply to, and your accommodation must reflect the night count. Consulates do check this arithmetic.
If the consulate insists on a paid ticket
Some consulates and some external agencies ask for a confirmed ticket rather than a reservation, particularly for certain nationalities or visa categories. If your appointment letter says so, follow it — but confirm the requirement in writing first, because it is the exception rather than the rule, and a paid fare before a decision is an unnecessary risk.
